Otter PeltOregon had groups of Pacific sea otters up and down the coastline until the demand for luxurious, water-resistant fur pelts became too high. Fur trappers hunted them to the brink of extinction, and no sea otter populations have successfully lived on the North Oregon Coast since the beginning of the 1900s.

Indigenous
This map showcases the Indigenous trade system that supported economy leading up to Euro-American settlement in the end of the 19th century. It was prepared by W.R. Swagerty, Professor Emeritus of History at The University of the Pacific, for the Smithsonian's Handbook of North American Indians published in 1988. You can see Tillamook marked as a significant permanent secondary center of trade on the North Oregon Coast.
